REMEMBRANCE…INTERVENTION…TOGETHER WE CAN BRING…AWARENESS

Rascal Flatts played a show in Denver this past Saturday night (9/10/2011). The South Metro Denver Walk committee reached out to them and they donated tickets and an opportunity for a meet and greet with the band members after the show. The committee auctioned off the tickets at the walk and raised $1,000. Check out the photo taken at the meet & greet here (the committee members even wore their OOTD shirts!). Special thanks to Rascall Flatts for their support, and to the South Metro Denver Walk Committee for their hard work!

Join us for a Community Walk

It’s August, which means we’re kicking into full gear as we prepare for over 225 Out of the Darkness Community Walks taking place all across the country this fall. Follow our journey on Tumblr as we chronicle these Walks and share the stories of the courageous people who participate in them. Find a walk near you and register to join us today.

WHY WE WALK

Walk to Honor a Loved One Many walk in memory of a loved one lost to suicide. AFSP provides opportunities for survivors of suicide loss to connect with each other and get involved through a wide variety of educational, outreach, awareness, advocacy and fundraising programs. Each walk site has its own unique remembrance activity in which you can participate to honor a loved one.

Walk to Support the Cause Those who have struggled personally with mental illness or suicide, those who come to support a friend or family member, those who are passionate about mental health education and advocacy also participate in the Out of the DarknessCommunity Walks.

Walk to Raise Awareness AFSP funds research aimed at improving our understanding of suicide and ways to prevent it as well as educational activities to increase awareness about prevention, warning signs and the psychiatric illnesses that can lead to suicide. People need to be aware of this public health issue.

By deciding to walk, you are taking us a step closer to making suicide prevention a national priority and helping to support the following:

  • Research to improve the understanding of factors that contribute to suicide;
  • Suicide prevention of college campuses through the dissemination of an educational film;
  • International Survivors of Suicide Day conferences
  • Development of national centers that will evaluate the effectiveness of suicide prevention treatments;
  • Creation of new survivor support groups
  • Local suicide prevention programs.

Have any questions? Write us at coaches@afsp.org.

We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you at an Out of the Darkness Walk in your community.
